On November 17, 2010 the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo was re-designated as a Safe Community by the World Health Organization for the third time. In 1995 we were the first North American community to receive this designation.
128 people attended the ceremony to celebrate the region’s success in injury prevention through ongoing cooperation and sustainability. Six key indicators were evaluated by WHO to ensure that our region is effective in promoting a better quality of life within the community:
- Partnerships and collaboration
- Long-term sustainable programs
- Programs targeting high risk and vulnerable groups
- Documentation of injury statistics
- Evaluation of programs
- Participation in national and international networks
