What you can SEE & DO

Rain or shine – bring your bike and helmet to Family Safety Day and participate in the indoor Bike Rodeo!

Bike Rodeo

Under the supervision of bylaw officers, kids will learn proper rules of the road on their bikes. They will learn the different hand signals and important rules to follow while riding their bikes.

Helmet Fitting

Emergency services will fit helmets and adjust straps to give kids the protection they need! They will teach everyone how to properly fit a bike helmet and free helmets will be distributed to those who require them.

Bike Inspections & Engraving

Sportswise will be on hand to inspect and tune your bike while Bylaw engraves your bike for identification purposes. Remember a properly maintained bike helps prevent injuries while riding.

Mascots

So many mascots – which ones will you hug? Come out and get your picture taken with Monty, Sparky, Careful Curtis, Rrribbit, Chipper, and – introducing this year – Bobcat Bob! Safety Mascots are a great way for kids to learn and have fun.

Prizes

Play to win awesome prizes! Take your Safety Passport to various booths and find the secret word to get your passport stamped. Once you’ve got 7 stamps, you get to pick out a prize bag!

Teddy Bear 1st Aid Post

St. John’s Ambulance Teddy Bear First Aid – bring in your teddy bear and fix up any injuries they might have!

Sparksman School Bus Safety

Find out about safety in, on and around the school bus! And you get to show mom and dad how you ride the bus.

Rollover Simulator

Families will learn the importance of seatbelts as they witness the car roll over. The proper use of seatbelts is key to the safety of your family and friends. What’s holding you back?

Fire Safety House

It’s getting hotter in here! Back by popular demand the Fire Safety House is an extremely fun and informative way to teach kids fire safety. Emergency Services staff will simulate a real fire and prepare your kids with the knowledge to get out safely.

Transit Rides

All aboard... the Wood Buffalo Transit Express will take you on a short ride so you can learn how to ride the bus, ring the bell, and get on and off safely. If you want to bring your bike along, they’ll even show you how to load it on the front bike rack.

RCMP Identification Booth

RCMP will provide identi-kits to parents so they can fingerprint their children and have vital information on hand in case of an emergency.

Fatal Vision Goggles

Walk the line! If you’re 14 years or older, you can try to navigate an obstacle course wearing a pair of fatal vision goggles that simulate impairment. Last year’s participants were amazed to realize how difficult simple tasks were and how poor their coordination was. Our message is always: None for the Road.

ABOUT FAMILY SAFETY DAY

FAMILY SAFETY DAY

Annually, since 1998, Safe Community Wood Buffalo (formally Wood Buffalo Safe/Healthy Community Network) has hosted an event to promote childhood injury prevention within the region. The event focuses on providing information and activities for not only children but the entire family.  The Childhood Injury Prevention Committee, a subcommittee of Safe Community Wood Buffalo, planned and organized the event. The Thickwood Heights Arena was once again the venue for the 2009 Family Safety Day which was held on May 2nd.

Overall Goals

  • To create public awareness by providing information to families about the most common injury risks and possible preventative behaviours.
  • To reinforce the message that the majority of injuries are predictable and preventable.
