Report Impaired Drivers Campaign

November 23, 2011

Road Safety Wood Buffalo will be launching its Report Impaired Drivers Campaign on November 23, 2011 in an effort to combat impaired driving and engage the public into calling 911 to report suspected impaired drivers to police. This campaign involves a multitude of stakeholders including MADD Canada, Alberta Health Services, RCMP, and RMWB.

The campaign will include three key messages:
1. Report Impaired Drivers
2. Safely Call 911
3. It’s Your Community. It’s Your Call

The campaign will include billboards mounted in 4 locations in Fort McMurray: Confederation Way, Thickwood Boulevard, Hospital Street, and Highway 69. The official launch of the Campaign will take place on the National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims, November 23rd, 5:30-8:30 at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre lobby. Please join us for fatal vision goggle demonstrations, unique giveaways, and local stories of people injured or killed in collisions.

In addition, a public education campaign will aim to achieve the following outcomes:

1. The public is aware of the Report Impaired Drivers Campaign.
2. The public accepts that impaired driving is a crime in progress.
3. The public is able to identify signs of suspected impaired drivers and knows how to safely and effectively use 911 to report impaired drivers.
4. The public accurately uses 911 to report suspected impaired drivers.

In 2009 motor vehicles were identified as the #1 injury issue in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Impaired driving is of significant concern in our region and, in 2010, 21% of drivers involved in fatalities and 4.7% of drivers in injury collisions had consumed alcohol prior to the crash.
